Location and Access

Location

The University town of Tubingen is situated on the River Neckar in
Southern Germany, in the heart of Baden-Wurttemberg, between the Black Forest and the Swabian Alps, and is not far from Stuttgart.  The University was founded in 1477 by Eberhard im Bart, Count and later first Duke of Wurttemberg.  Life in Tubingen is characterized by its 20,000 students, living in this comparatively small city of 85,000 inhabitants.

The Workshop will be held in the main lecture theatre complex of the University, called the Kupferbau, located within 10 minutes walking distance from the city centre, and less than 10 minutes bus ride from most accommodation.

Access

 

By plane

The nearest airport to Tubingen is Stuttgart.

The next most convenient connections are from Frankfurt, Munich or Zurich / Switzerland.

If you fly to Stuttgart Airport, there are three ways to reach Tubingen via public transport:

  • Taxi requires about 30 to 40 minutes and costs approx. 46,- EUR. A taxi stop is located in front of the airport main building.

  • A shuttle bus, Airport Sprinter, line no. 828, runs between the airport and the central bus station of Tubingen. You can buy the tickets in the bus (4,60 EUR). The buses leave every hour, the first one leaving at 7:36 in the morning and the last one leaving at 19:36 in the evening. On Saturdays, the buses to Tubingen operate on a 2-hour basis from 7:21 to 19:21. There is no bus service on Sundays and holidays. The ride takes approx. 50 minutes.

  • If you prefer to continue from the aiport by train, you must take the S-Bahn (S2 or S3) to the central railway station in Stuttgart. You will find the S-Bahn-stops on the ground-floor of the airport building. Trains operate between 5 a.m. and midnight every 10 and 20 min, respectively. It will take you 30 min to reach the central station of Stuttgart. In Stuttgart you can continue as described for the arrival by train below.

By train

Main railway station for long distance trains ICE, IC, EC is Stuttgart, which is about 50 km from Tubingen.

From the central railway station in Stuttgart, regional trains to Tubingen via Esslingen, Plochingen, Nurtingen, and Reutlingen leave daily every hour from 6:18 to 0:32 o´clock. It will take 1 hour to reach the main station in Tubingen.  It is very close to the centre of Tubingen.

Timetables may be obtained via Deutsche Bundesbahn (international and national railways) or via EFA (regional railways and buses).


By car

Travelling by car, Tubingen can be reached best by taking either the A81 (E41) motorway (Stuttgart-Singen) or the A8 (E52) motorway (Munich-Stuttgart-Karlsruhe), which runs adjacent to the airport.

From A8 (E52) motorway: directions Munich to Stuttgart / Karlsruhe to Stuttgart

The most rapid connection to Tubingen is via the Bundesstrasse B27. Leave at exit no. 52 Stuttgart-Degerloch and follow the sign Tubingen / Reutlingen, B27. This Bundesstrasse does not go through villages. This route is frequently blocked by traffic jams during rush hour. It takes about 20 min to reach the surroundings of Tubingen.

From A81 (E41) motorway: direction Singen to Stuttgart

Leave at exit no. 28 Herrenberg and follow the sign Tubingen, Ammerbuch, B28.  You reach the surroundings of Tubingen in about 15 min via Ammerbuch-Entringen and Unterjesingen.

Alternatively, you may leave at exit no. 29 Rottenburg and follow the sign Rottenburg, Tubingen / Reutlingen, B28a. Following the signs Tubingen, you reach the surroundings of Tubingen in about 15 min.

Parking

Parking has been reserved directly behind the Kupferbau, with entrance from Gmelinstrasse.

Of course, you can also use parking garages throughout Tubingen, the closest being "Parkhaus Konig" in Rumelinstrasse.
